A topic frequently discussed during the Qlik Meet-up Lund was the lack of young people entering the market with solid data experience. During one of the breakout sessions, Ralfo Becher, Data & AI Engineer at Orientbelt.ai – a GenAI Semantic Layer company, suggested reaching young people by launching QlikTok. The need to do more in schools and other youth settings to spark interest in data from an early age was emphasized.
As a result, Steve Dark, Qlik Sense and QlikView Expert, Qlik Luminary Alumni and MVP, recommended Kids in Data, a platform created by Shirajul Kabir Rab, co-founder of Kids in Data, Head of Technology, STEM Ambassador, Data Literacy Advocate, and Public Speaker, together with Ross W., Solutions Consultant at Pigment and co-founder of Kids in Data, precisely for this purpose.
This innovative platform allows educators to organize workshops where young people play multiple games of Space Invaders. While playing, participants generate data, which they can later explore, analyzing whether their scores improved using a simple line chart. This exercise provides an excellent starting point for further discussions about data.
Furthermore, for Qlik, users, the site offers a REST API, which allows all workshop scores to be downloaded and viewed in a Qlik application.
Data literacy is crucial today, especially as AI tools make chart creation very easy, but it is essential to understand the importance of good data storytelling and stewardship. The earlier this journey begins, the better.
